Speakers at the Information Day:

Professor Neil Piller

Neil is a Lymphologist and Director of the Lymphoedema Research Unit at Flinders University in Adelaide. He is an executive member of the International Society for Lymphology and a member of the Editorial Boards for multiple journals including the Journal of Lymphoedema. Prof Piller is a director of the International Lymphoedema Framework and a member of the steering committees for the Australian and American Lymphoedema Frameworks. He is also a member of the World Alliance for Wound and Lymphoedema Care.

 

Dr Deirdre McGhee

Deirdre is a senior lecturer at the Wollongong University, School of Medicine. Deirdre’s research focuses predominantly on the biomechanics of breast health, specifically sports bra design and bra fit to promote physical activity in women. From her extensive clinical background as a sports physiotherapist, Deirdre also has interests in musculoskeletal rehabilitation and musculoskeletal anatomy. She is currently working with a team, in conjunction with Cancer Australia, to develop a wearable sleeve for patients who experience breast cancer-related lymphoedema.

 

Dr Elizabeth Dylke

Liz is a physiotherapist and lecturer at the University of Sydney; she is also the NSW/ACT State Rep for the Australasian Lymphology Association (ALA). Liz completed her lymphoedema training with Brenda Lee in Sydney and then completed her PhD with the Breast Cancer Research Group at the University of Sydney. Liz’s research focuses primarily on the detection and measurement of lymphoedema. As part of her role for the ALA, Liz sits on the committees for the Lymphoedema Action Alliance, as well as the Australian New Zealand Lymphoedema Registry (ANZLoR).

 

Professor Andrew Miller

Andrew is a Radiation Oncologist and a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Wollongong. He is also an Honorary Professorial Fellow at the School of Informatics. Before entering medicine at Newcastle University, Andrew was a High School science teacher in the country. Once a qualified radiation oncologist, Andrew worked in Sydney, New Zealand, Goulburn and now Wollongong.

 

Sally Keir-Ewin

Sally has been a physiotherapist since 1981, a lymphoedema therapist since 2002, a cancer survivor since 2003, and a person living with lymphoedema since 2004. Currently not working clinically, Sally is enrolled as a PhD student at the University of Newcastle. Her current research is looking at how people learn to self-manage their lymphoedema, and how they are taught it.

 

Elsebeth Petersen

Elsebeth has taught continuously for some 30 years in infants, primary, secondary and adult education. In 1993 she attended her first class in lymphatic drainage, and spent the next 17 years ordering her studies to “change her teaching subject”. Like many other Australian therapists, her training began with Drs John and Judith Casley-Smith in Adelaide. In 2005, she received her award as an accredited teacher of the Casley-Smith method. She currently has private clinical practices in Moss Vale, and in Canberra, and runs CLT management courses. These are recognised by the Australasian Lymphology Association, and the National Lymphoedema Practitioner Register. Elsebeth is also qualified as a Földi Klinik, lymphoedema therapist (Vodder method of manual drainage).

 

Andrea Mangion

Andrea is an accredited Physiotherapist specialising in lymphoedema management and is the Clinical Director of Oedema Clinics in Sydney. Andrea is also a Director of Lymphoedema Training and Education Pty Ltd and is an Australasian Lymphology Association endorsed trainer in Lymphoedema. Andrea has completed Lymphoedema Training in Sydney and advanced lymphoedema studies in Germany at the world-renowned Földi Clinic. Andrea has also trained in Sweden and Finland to advance her studies on innovative treatment options for lymphoedema, including liposuction for lymphoedema and the latest in non-invasive treatment options for fibrosis and fatty tissue in lymphoedema.

 

Jan Hunter

Jan is a Lymphoedema and Remedial Massage Practitioner. She has over 20 years experience in the treatment, management and education of Lymphoedema and embraces a  multidisciplinary approach.  Jan ‘s clinical practise promotes  self management and treatment for adhesions and scarring as a tool for prevention of  lymphoedema. Jan is currently involved in studies involving new technology for the breakdown of adhesions and fibrosis. Jan has recently returned from Myanmar assisting in clinical trials for the early detection of  Lymphatic Filariasis (Elephantitis) in developing countries.
